How Is Steel Weight Calculated?
Steel weight is fundamentally calculated from the volume of steel multiplied by its density.
The calculator uses a theoretical steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. For shapes such as flat bars, pipes and tubes, the cross-sectional area is first calculated and converted to a theoretical mass per meter.
When cross-sectional area is expressed in square millimeters, the relationship used by the calculator is:
Steel Weight Formulas Used by the Calculator
Different steel profiles require different geometric formulas. The following table summarizes the theoretical formulas used by this calculator.
| Steel Shape | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Plate / Sheet | Thickness × 7.85 | kg/m² |
| Flat Bar | Width × Thickness × 0.00785 | kg/m |
| Round Bar | (π ÷ 4) × Diameter² × 0.00785 | kg/m |
| Square Bar | Side² × 0.00785 | kg/m |
| Equal Angle Bar | (2 × Leg − Thickness) × Thickness × 0.00785 | kg/m |
| Round Pipe | π × (OD − T) × T × 0.00785 | kg/m |
| Square Tube | [S² − (S − 2T)²] × 0.00785 | kg/m |
| Rectangular Tube | [W × H − (W − 2T)(H − 2T)] × 0.00785 | kg/m |
For the formulas above, section dimensions are expressed in millimeters. Longitudinal lengths are entered separately in meters.
Steel Plate Weight Calculator
For steel plates and sheets, the theoretical weight per square meter depends on the plate thickness.
For example, a 6 mm steel plate has a theoretical unit weight of:
A 1.20 m × 2.40 m sheet has an area of 2.88 m², giving:
Therefore, a theoretical 6 mm × 1.20 m × 2.40 m steel plate weighs approximately 135.65 kg per sheet.
Flat Bar Weight Calculator
Flat bar weight is calculated from its width and thickness.
For a 50 mm × 6 mm flat bar:
If the bar is 6 meters long, its theoretical weight is:
Round Bar Weight Calculator
For a solid round steel bar, the calculator determines the circular cross-sectional area before converting it to kilograms per meter.
A 20 mm diameter solid round bar has a theoretical cross-sectional area of approximately 314.16 mm² and a unit weight of approximately 2.466 kg/m.
Square Bar Weight Calculator
A solid square bar is calculated from the square of its side dimension.
For example, a solid 20 mm × 20 mm square bar has a cross-sectional area of 400 mm² and a theoretical weight of:
Angle Bar Weight Calculator
For an equal angle, the calculator uses a simplified geometric section made from two rectangular legs while deducting the overlapping corner.
For a 50 × 50 × 5 mm equal angle, the simplified cross-sectional area is:
This produces an approximate theoretical unit weight of 3.729 kg/m.
Steel Pipe Weight Calculator
Round pipe is a hollow section. The calculator therefore deducts the hollow inside area rather than calculating the pipe as a solid round bar.
Where OD is the outside diameter and T is the wall thickness, both expressed in millimeters.
The wall thickness must be less than half the outside diameter for the geometry to be valid.
Square Tube Weight Calculator
For square hollow sections, the steel cross-sectional area is calculated by subtracting the hollow inner square from the outside square.
The resulting area is multiplied by 0.00785 to obtain the theoretical weight in kilograms per meter.
Rectangular Tube Weight Calculator
Rectangular hollow sections use the same outer-area-minus-inner-area principle.
Where:
- W = outside width
- H = outside height
- T = wall thickness
The calculated cross-sectional area is then converted to kg/m using the theoretical steel-density factor.
How to Calculate Total Steel Weight
Once the theoretical unit weight is known, the weight of one bar, pipe or tube is calculated by multiplying the unit weight by the length of one piece.
The total theoretical steel weight is then:
The calculator also converts the total into metric tons:
How Many Steel Pieces Are in One Metric Ton?
The calculator also provides an approximate number of whole pieces that would make up one metric ton based on the calculated theoretical weight per piece.
The result is rounded down to whole pieces because a fraction of a full-length piece is not counted as one whole piece.
Theoretical Weight vs Actual Steel Weight
The calculated value should be treated as a theoretical estimate rather than a guaranteed delivered weight.
Actual steel products may differ because of:
- Manufacturing dimensional tolerances
- Actual wall thickness
- Rolling tolerances
- Root and corner radii
- Surface coatings
- Galvanizing
- Product-specific geometry
- Manufacturer specifications
For quantity takeoffs and preliminary procurement checks, theoretical weight can be useful. For final purchasing, billing or verification of a particular steel product, check the supplier’s published unit mass or actual certified product data.
Why I-Beams, Wide Flange and Channels Are Not Included
Structural rolled sections such as I-beams, wide-flange sections and channels have more complex geometry than simple plates and bars. Their published unit masses account for the actual rolled section geometry, including web and flange dimensions and section radii.
For this reason, this calculator does not attempt to estimate those sections using an oversimplified geometric formula. Published structural steel section tables should be used instead.
Does the Calculator Include Steel Cost?
No. This version focuses on steel quantity and theoretical weight rather than price.
Steel can be quoted per piece, per kilogram or per metric ton, and prices can vary by supplier, size, grade, coating, quantity, location and market conditions. Keeping price separate allows the calculator to remain useful even when steel prices change.
Steel Weight Calculator Philippines FAQs
How do I calculate steel weight?
Steel weight is calculated from the volume of steel multiplied by its density. For bars, pipes and tubes, the calculator first determines the cross-sectional area and then converts it to a theoretical weight per meter.
What steel density does the calculator use?
The calculator uses a theoretical steel density of 7,850 kg/m³, equivalent to 7.85 g/cm³.
How much does a 6 mm steel plate weigh per square meter?
Using a theoretical steel density of 7,850 kg/m³, a 6 mm steel plate weighs approximately 47.10 kg/m².
How do I calculate flat bar weight?
Multiply the flat bar width in millimeters by its thickness in millimeters and then multiply by 0.00785. This gives the theoretical weight in kilograms per meter.
How do I calculate round bar weight?
For a solid round bar, calculate its circular cross-sectional area using π/4 × diameter², then multiply the area in mm² by 0.00785 to obtain kg/m.
Is round bar the same as rebar?
No. This calculator treats round bar as a solid plain round steel section. For reinforcing steel used in concrete construction, use the dedicated Rebar Calculator Philippines.
How do I calculate angle bar weight?
For equal angles, this calculator uses the simplified area (2 × leg − thickness) × thickness and converts that area to kg/m. Actual rolled-angle weight may differ slightly because of root and toe radii.
How do I calculate steel pipe weight?
Pipe weight is based on the outside diameter and wall thickness. The calculator deducts the hollow internal area and converts the remaining steel cross-sectional area to kilograms per meter.
Can I calculate square tube weight?
Yes. Enter the outside size, wall thickness, length and quantity. The calculator subtracts the inner hollow square from the outside square to determine the theoretical steel area.
Can I calculate rectangular tube weight?
Yes. Enter the outside width, outside height, wall thickness, length and quantity to estimate the theoretical weight.
How many kilograms are in one metric ton of steel?
One metric ton equals 1,000 kilograms.
How many pieces of steel are in one metric ton?
It depends on the dimensions and length of each steel piece. Divide 1,000 kg by the calculated weight per piece to estimate how many whole pieces correspond to one metric ton.
Why can actual steel weight differ from the calculator?
The calculator uses ideal geometric dimensions. Actual products can vary because of manufacturing tolerances, section radii, actual thickness, coatings and manufacturer-specific geometry.
Can I use this calculator for final steel procurement?
Use it for preliminary estimating and quantity checking. For final procurement or billing, verify the product dimensions and published unit mass from the manufacturer or supplier whenever available.
