Preliminary Septic Tank Estimate
Capacity Calculation Breakdown
Our free Septic Tank Calculator Philippines provides a preliminary estimate of septic tank capacity for residential planning. It uses household occupancy, number of bedrooms, desludging interval, design temperature and effective liquid depth to estimate the required capacity and approximate internal space needed for a two-chamber septic tank.
How to Use the Septic Tank Calculator
Enter the information describing the household and preliminary design conditions. The calculator then estimates the septic tank capacity and compares the calculated result with the applicable residential bedroom capacity used by the tool.
- Enter the number of actual occupants.
- Select the number of bedrooms.
- Select a desludging interval from 3 to 5 years.
- Enter the preliminary design temperature.
- Select an effective liquid depth of at least 1.20 m.

- Review the governing capacity, volume breakdown and preliminary space-planning dimensions.
Philippine Septic Tank Design Basis
The calculator is structured around septic-tank design considerations used in the Philippines, including principles contained in the Department of Health national standard for septic tank systems.
For its preliminary calculation, the tool uses the following fixed design parameters:
| Design Parameter | Calculator Basis |
|---|---|
| Minimum design population | 10 persons |
| Design wastewater flow | 189.2 L/person/day |
| Minimum effective liquid depth | 1.20 m |
| Freeboard used | 0.30 m |
| Desludging interval | 3–5 years |
| Tank arrangement | Minimum two-chamber concept |
| Preliminary chamber split | Approximately 2/3 + 1/3 |
| Scum storage used by calculator | 40% of sludge-storage volume |
How Is Septic Tank Capacity Calculated?
Septic tank sizing should not be based only on the amount of wastewater entering the tank in one day. Space is also needed for solids undergoing digestion, accumulated digested sludge and floating scum.
For this reason, the calculator separates the preliminary effective volume into four components:
- Sedimentation zone
- Sludge digestion zone
- Digested sludge storage zone
- Scum storage zone
The calculator also displays a separate 24-hour hydraulic volume check so users can see the relationship between daily wastewater flow and the calculated effective capacity.
Design Wastewater Flow
The calculator uses a design wastewater flow of 189.2 liters per person per day, equivalent to approximately 50 US gallons per person per day.
For example, a design population of 10 persons gives:
A design population of 20 persons gives:
Sedimentation Zone
The sedimentation zone provides volume for the wastewater while solids settle and lighter materials rise toward the scum layer.
The calculator determines a preliminary sedimentation retention value from the design population and wastewater flow and displays the resulting sedimentation-zone volume separately.
This component should not be interpreted as saying the entire septic tank requires only the displayed sedimentation retention time. The calculator separately displays the 24-hour hydraulic-volume check and includes sludge and scum storage in its overall sizing process.
Sludge Digestion Zone
Settled solids accumulate in the tank and undergo biological decomposition. The calculator includes a preliminary sludge-digestion volume based partly on the selected design temperature.
This is why the calculator asks for a design temperature rather than sizing the tank only from the number of occupants.
Sludge Storage and Desludging Interval
A septic tank must provide storage for digested sludge between desludging operations. The longer the selected interval, the greater the storage volume required.
For the 3–5 year options available in this calculator, the preliminary sludge storage calculation uses:
For example, for a design population of 10 persons and a five-year interval:
Reducing the selected interval to three years reduces the calculated storage requirement:
This demonstrates why regular desludging is an important part of septic tank operation and not merely a maintenance issue unrelated to tank sizing.
Scum Storage
Scum consists of floating materials that accumulate near the liquid surface. The calculator includes a preliminary scum-storage allowance equal to 40% of the calculated sludge-storage volume.
If the calculated sludge storage is 3.00 m³, the calculator therefore provides 1.20 m³ of preliminary scum-storage capacity.
Why Does the Calculator Ask for Bedrooms?
The number of occupants is not the only residential sizing check used by the tool. The calculator also performs a bedroom-based minimum-capacity cross-check for residential use.
| Bedrooms | Minimum Capacity Used for Cross-Check |
|---|---|
| 1–2 bedrooms | 2.838 m³ |
| 3 bedrooms | 3.785 m³ |
| 4 bedrooms | 4.542 m³ |
| 5–6 bedrooms | 5.678 m³ |
The calculator compares this value with its calculated effective volume. The larger value becomes the preliminary governing tank capacity.
How Are Preliminary Septic Tank Dimensions Estimated?
After determining the governing capacity, the calculator converts that volume into approximate internal space-planning dimensions.
For this preliminary layout, the calculator assumes a rectangular tank with a 2:1 length-to-width ratio.
Using:
and the assumed relationship:
the calculator determines an approximate internal width and liquid length capable of providing the governing capacity at the selected effective liquid depth.
Effective Liquid Depth and Freeboard
The calculator allows effective liquid depths from 1.20 m to 1.50 m, with 1.20 m as the minimum selectable value.
It then adds a 0.30 m freeboard when displaying the approximate internal height to the top of the freeboard.
For example:
This is not the total excavation depth. Structural slab thicknesses, base preparation, invert levels, cover requirements and other construction details are not included.
Why Does a Septic Tank Need Two Chambers?
The calculator presents a preliminary two-chamber arrangement. The first chamber is assigned approximately twice the capacity of the second chamber.
For preliminary planning:
For a governing tank capacity of 5.40 m³, this would correspond to approximately 3.60 m³ for the first chamber and 1.80 m³ for the second.
The displayed chamber lengths assume the same width and liquid depth throughout the rectangular tank.
Example Septic Tank Calculation for a House
Consider a house with:
- 5 actual occupants
- 3 bedrooms
- 5-year desludging interval
- 25°C preliminary design temperature
- 1.20 m effective liquid depth
Because the household has fewer than 10 occupants, the calculator uses a 10-person design population.
The design wastewater flow becomes:
Using the calculator’s four-zone methodology, the preliminary calculated effective capacity is approximately 5.39 m³. This is larger than the 3-bedroom cross-check of 3.785 m³, so the calculated capacity governs.
At a 1.20 m effective liquid depth and the calculator’s 2:1 planning ratio, the approximate internal liquid dimensions are around:
- Length: 3.00 m
- Width: 1.50 m
- Effective liquid depth: 1.20 m
- Height including 0.30 m freeboard: 1.50 m
These dimensions are useful for preliminary space planning only and are not construction drawings.
Can I Use the Calculator for More Than 100 Persons?
No. The calculator intentionally stops when the entered occupancy exceeds 100 persons.
Larger developments require more comprehensive wastewater treatment assessment and professional design. The simple residential septic tank calculator should not be extended to large occupancies merely by multiplying the household result.
What the Septic Tank Calculator Does Not Design
This calculator estimates preliminary tank capacity and internal space. It does not calculate:
- Reinforced-concrete wall or slab thickness
- Reinforcement size or spacing
- Structural loading
- Excavation depth
- Inlet and outlet invert elevations
- Pipe sizing and detailed plumbing layout
- Leach-field or soil-absorption area
- Seepage-pit sizing
- Soil percolation or infiltration capacity
- Groundwater separation requirements
- Final effluent discharge arrangement
- Permit or regulatory approval
These items depend on the actual site, soil, groundwater, building, wastewater characteristics and applicable local requirements.
Septic Tank Calculator Philippines FAQs
How do I calculate septic tank size in the Philippines?
Septic tank sizing should consider more than daily wastewater flow. This calculator considers design population, wastewater flow, sedimentation, sludge digestion, sludge storage, scum storage and a residential bedroom-capacity cross-check to provide a preliminary estimate.
What is the minimum design population used by this calculator?
The calculator uses a minimum design population of 10 persons. If fewer than 10 actual occupants are entered, the calculation still uses 10 persons.
How much wastewater per person does the calculator use?
The calculator uses 189.2 liters per person per day, approximately equivalent to 50 US gallons per person per day.
What is the minimum liquid depth used by the calculator?
The minimum selectable effective liquid depth is 1.20 meters. The calculator separately adds 0.30 meter of freeboard when showing its preliminary internal height.
How often should the septic tank be desludged?
The calculator provides 3-, 4- and 5-year intervals for preliminary sizing. Actual desludging needs also depend on usage, accumulated solids and the operating condition of the septic system.
Why does a longer desludging interval increase septic tank size?
A longer interval requires more capacity to store accumulated digested sludge and associated scum before the tank is emptied.
Why does the calculator ask for the number of bedrooms?
The bedroom count provides an additional residential minimum-capacity cross-check. The calculator compares that value with its calculated effective volume and uses the larger value as the preliminary governing capacity.
Does a septic tank need two chambers?
The calculator uses a minimum two-chamber concept and displays a preliminary split of approximately two-thirds of the capacity for the first chamber and one-third for the second.
Is the 2:1 tank length-to-width ratio required by Philippine code?
No. The 2:1 ratio used here is a preliminary space-planning assumption for converting volume into easy-to-understand dimensions. Final tank geometry should follow the approved project design.
Does the calculated height include freeboard?
Yes. The calculator adds 0.30 meter of freeboard to the selected effective liquid depth when displaying the approximate internal height to the top of the freeboard.
Does the calculator include wall and slab thickness?
No. The displayed dimensions are internal space-planning dimensions. Structural wall, base slab and cover slab thicknesses are not calculated.
Does this calculator size the leach field?
No. Soil-absorption and leach-field sizing depend on site and soil conditions and should not be calculated from septic tank capacity alone.
Can I use this calculator for 100 people?
The calculator accepts up to 100 persons. For occupancies above 100 persons, it stops the calculation and advises a more comprehensive wastewater treatment and professional design approach.
Can I use the result for construction?
The result is intended for preliminary planning and estimating. Final construction should be based on an appropriately designed and approved septic system considering the actual building, site, soil, groundwater and regulatory requirements.
