Paint Calculator Philippines
Estimate paint required for walls and other painted surfaces.
Calculation Assumptions
- Gross area is calculated from surface dimensions multiplied by the number of identical surfaces.
- Doors, windows and other openings are deducted from the combined gross area.
- Paint quantity is calculated from net paintable area × number of coats ÷ coverage rate.
- The selected allowance is applied after the base paint quantity is calculated.
- Containers are rounded upward to whole containers.
- The default 8 m²/L per coat is a preliminary estimating value only. Actual manufacturer coverage should be used whenever available.
- This estimate does not include primer, skimcoat, putty, thinner, solvents or other coating-system materials.
How to Use the Paint Calculator Philippines
This Paint Calculator Philippines helps estimate how many liters of paint may be required for walls and other paintable surfaces. It can account for multiple identical surfaces, doors and windows, the number of coats, paint coverage, allowance and container size.
To estimate your paint requirement:
- Enter the length and height or width of the surface.
- Enter the number of identical surfaces if you are painting several walls with the same dimensions.
- Deduct the total area of doors, windows or other openings that will not be painted.
- Select the required number of paint coats.
- Enter the paint coverage in square meters per liter per coat.
- Select an allowance for wastage and application losses.
- Select the container size you plan to purchase.
- Click Calculate Paint.
How to Calculate How Much Paint You Need
Paint quantity depends primarily on the paintable surface area, number of coats and coverage of the selected paint.
Length × Height × Number of Identical Surfaces
Net Paintable Area
Gross Surface Area − Doors, Windows and Other Openings
Paint Required Before Allowance
Net Paintable Area × Number of Coats ÷ Paint Coverage
Estimated Paint Required
Paint Required × (1 + Allowance Percentage)
What Does Paint Coverage in m²/L Mean?
Paint coverage indicates approximately how much surface area can be covered by one liter of paint for one coat. For example, a coverage rate of 8 m²/L means that one liter theoretically covers approximately 8 square meters for one coat under the assumed application conditions.
Coverage is not universal. It varies between paint products and can also change because of surface texture, porosity, substrate condition, application method and required film thickness.
The calculator therefore uses 8 m²/L per coat only as a preliminary default. For a more product-specific estimate, replace this value with the coverage stated by the paint manufacturer on the product label or technical data sheet.
Why Does the Calculator Use 8 m²/L as the Default?
The 8 m²/L value is intended as a practical starting point rather than a universal Philippine paint standard.
As a Philippine reference, some architectural latex paints publish theoretical topcoat coverage of approximately 30–35 m² per 4-liter container. This corresponds to approximately 7.5–8.75 m² per liter under the manufacturer's specified conditions.
35 m² ÷ 4 L = 8.75 m²/L
Actual coverage may be lower or higher depending on the particular paint and surface. Always use the selected product's published coverage when available.
How Does the Number of Coats Affect Paint Quantity?
Each additional coat increases the total surface coverage required. If a 20 m² wall receives two coats, the paint must theoretically cover a total of 40 m².
| Net Paintable Area | Coats | Total Coated Area | Paint at 8 m²/L |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 m² | 1 | 20 m² | 2.50 L |
| 20 m² | 2 | 40 m² | 5.00 L |
| 20 m² | 3 | 60 m² | 7.50 L |
These examples are mathematical estimates using 8 m²/L. The actual number of coats and appropriate paint system should follow the manufacturer's instructions for the selected product and substrate.
Should Doors and Windows Be Deducted?
If doors, windows or other openings will not be painted with the selected coating, their area can be deducted from the gross wall area.
For example, four identical walls measuring 4 m wide × 3 m high have a combined gross area of:
If doors and windows total 6 m²:
48 m² − 6 m² = 42 m² net paintable area
How Much Paint Allowance Should You Add?
The calculator includes an optional allowance because calculated theoretical consumption and actual site consumption may differ. Paint can be lost through application, transfer between containers and tools, surface absorption and other site conditions.
The calculator uses 5% as a convenient preliminary default allowance. This is an estimating assumption built into this tool, not a universal manufacturer requirement. You can select 0%, 10% or enter your own custom allowance.
The manufacturer's published coverage and the actual condition of the surface should remain the primary basis for estimating the selected paint.
Paint Container Size and Purchase Quantity
Paint is sold in containers rather than as an exact calculated number of liters. The calculator therefore converts the estimated paint requirement into whole containers based on the container size you select.
Common product packaging can include 1 L, 4 L and larger containers, but available sizes vary by manufacturer and product. Always confirm the actual packaging before purchasing.
Required paint = 5.25 L
Selected container = 4 L
5.25 ÷ 4 = 1.31 containers
Purchase quantity = 2 whole containers
This means the quantity purchased may be greater than the calculated paint consumption because containers are rounded upward to whole units.
Example Paint Calculation
Example: 20 m² Wall Area with Two Coats
Assume the net paintable area is 20 m², the paint requires 2 coats, the preliminary coverage is 8 m²/L, the allowance is 5%, and the selected container size is 4 L.
Total coated area:
20 m² × 2 coats = 40 m²
Paint before allowance:
40 m² ÷ 8 m²/L = 5.00 L
Including 5% allowance:
5.00 L × 1.05 = 5.25 L
4-liter containers:
5.25 ÷ 4 = 1.31 containers
5.25 L or 2 × 4 L containers
Does This Calculator Include Primer, Putty or Thinner?
No. The current calculator estimates the selected paint coating only. It does not automatically estimate primer, skimcoat, putty, thinner, reducer or other materials that may form part of a complete painting system.
These materials should not simply be calculated using the same coverage as the topcoat. Their requirements depend on the substrate, surface preparation, product and manufacturer's specified painting system.
Paint Calculator Philippines Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much paint I need?
Calculate the net paintable area after deducting unpainted openings. Multiply the net area by the number of coats, then divide by the selected paint's coverage in m²/L. An appropriate allowance can then be added for estimating purposes.
How many liters of paint do I need for 20 square meters?
At an assumed coverage of 8 m²/L, one coat over 20 m² requires approximately 2.50 L before allowance. Two coats require approximately 5.00 L before allowance. Actual consumption depends on the selected paint and surface.
How many square meters can 1 liter of paint cover?
There is no single coverage rate for every paint. Coverage varies by product and application conditions. This calculator uses 8 m²/L per coat as a preliminary default, but the manufacturer's published coverage for the actual product should be used whenever available.
How many square meters can 4 liters of paint cover?
Using the calculator's preliminary rate of 8 m²/L, 4 liters theoretically covers about 32 m² for one coat. This is only an estimating example. Some Philippine paint products publish their own theoretical coverage ranges, so always check the selected product specification.
Should I calculate one coat or two coats of paint?
Use the number of coats required by the selected paint system and manufacturer. Two topcoats are common in many painting systems, but the correct requirement depends on the product, substrate, existing surface and desired finish.
Should I deduct doors and windows from the wall area?
Yes, if those areas will not receive the paint being estimated. Enter the combined area of the doors, windows or other openings into the deduction field.
Why is actual paint consumption different from the calculation?
Actual consumption can vary because of surface texture, porosity, substrate condition, application method, film thickness, workmanship and the specific paint product. Calculated quantities should therefore be treated as estimates rather than guaranteed consumption.
Can I use the calculator for several walls?
Yes. If several walls have identical dimensions, enter the number of identical surfaces. If the walls have different dimensions, calculate them separately or first determine their combined paintable area.
Can I enter the coverage rate from my paint brand?
Yes. This is recommended when the product's coverage is available. Replace the default 8 m²/L value with the coverage stated on the manufacturer's label or technical data sheet for a more product-specific estimate.
Does the calculator include primer and putty?
No. Primer, skimcoat, putty, thinner and other painting system materials are not included. Their consumption depends on the product, substrate and specified painting system and should be estimated separately.
This calculator is intended for preliminary material estimating and planning. Actual paint consumption may vary because of the selected product, substrate, surface preparation, texture, porosity, application method, required film thickness and workmanship. Confirm final requirements using the paint manufacturer's current technical data and project specifications before purchasing.
