Our free Water Tank Size Calculator Philippines helps homeowners estimate how much domestic water storage they may need based on the number of occupants, daily water demand, desired storage duration and an optional reserve allowance. You can also calculate the capacity of an existing rectangular cistern or vertical cylindrical water tank in liters, cubic meters and US gallons.
How to Use the Water Tank Size Calculator
The calculator has two separate functions depending on whether you are planning a new water tank or checking the capacity of an existing tank.
Option 1: Size My Water Tank
- Enter the number of household occupants.
- Select the estimated daily water demand per person.
- Select how many days of water storage you want.
- Choose an additional reserve allowance.
- Select either a single tank or a cistern plus overhead tank setup.
- Click Calculate Water Tank Size.
The result shows the calculated storage requirement, a suggested nominal planning capacity and the approximate number of days the suggested capacity could supply the household.
Option 2: Existing Tank Volume
If you already have a tank or concrete cistern, select its shape and enter its internal usable water dimensions. The calculator converts the dimensions into cubic meters, liters and US gallons.
How Much Water Storage Does a House Need?
A practical preliminary estimate starts with the number of occupants and their assumed daily water demand.
The daily demand is then multiplied by the desired number of storage days.
Finally, any selected reserve allowance is added.
Daily Water Demand per Person
The calculator uses 150 liters per person per day as its default household planning value. However, the field is editable because actual water consumption varies significantly between households.
| Planning Setting | Daily Demand | Suggested Use |
|---|---|---|
| Low-use planning | 100 L/person/day | For households expecting relatively conservative water consumption. |
| Standard planning | 150 L/person/day | Default preliminary household planning value used by this calculator. |
| Higher-use planning | 200 L/person/day | For households wanting to plan for greater daily water consumption. |
| Custom | User-defined | For projects with their own water-demand estimate or design basis. |
Water Tank Size for a Family of 4
For example, consider a household with four occupants using the calculator's default 150 L/person/day planning value.
For one day of storage:
With a 10% reserve:
The calculated requirement is therefore 660 liters. Because commercial tanks are generally selected using nominal capacities rather than an exact calculated volume, the calculator rounds upward to a practical planning capacity.
Water Tank Size for a Family of 5
Using five occupants, 150 L/person/day, one day of storage and a 10% reserve:
The calculator would therefore suggest planning for at least the next suitable nominal capacity above 825 liters, such as approximately 1,000 liters, subject to the actual sizes offered by the selected tank manufacturer or supplier.
Water Tank Size for a Family of 6
For six occupants using 150 L/person/day:
If the household wants two days of storage:
Adding a 10% planning reserve gives:
A household under these assumptions should therefore plan for approximately 2,000 liters or more of total nominal water-storage capacity.
How Many Days of Water Should I Store?
The appropriate storage duration depends heavily on the reliability of the water supply and the household's needs. The calculator therefore allows the user to select the storage duration instead of assuming that every home needs the same number of days.
| Storage Duration | Planning Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0.5 day | Short buffer where water supply is generally reliable. |
| 1 day | Default household backup-storage planning period. |
| 1.5–2 days | Greater buffer for households concerned about longer interruptions. |
| 3 days | Larger reserve where interruptions may be longer or greater storage security is desired. |
| Custom | Allows the homeowner or designer to use a project-specific storage period. |
More storage is not automatically better in every situation. Larger tanks require more space, additional structural consideration and greater initial cost, while stored potable water also needs proper system design and maintenance.
What Is the Additional Water Reserve?
The reserve percentage provides additional capacity above the calculated base storage requirement.
For example, if the household requires 1,500 L of base storage and chooses a 10% reserve:
The calculator's default 10% reserve is a planning allowance. It should not be interpreted as a mandatory percentage required for every Philippine water tank installation.
Single Water Tank vs Cistern and Overhead Tank
Philippine houses may use different water-storage arrangements depending on the available supply, pressure, building configuration and pumping system. The calculator therefore supports two preliminary setups.
Single Tank
The entire calculated storage requirement is treated as one overall tank capacity. The actual tank may be installed at ground level, elevated or in another arrangement determined by the project design.
Cistern + Overhead Tank
In this setup, the total storage is divided between a lower cistern or ground tank and an overhead tank.
The calculator uses 33% overhead storage as its default planning split, but the percentage is editable.
Example Cistern and Overhead Tank Calculation
Suppose a six-person household requires 1,980 L of total calculated storage and selects a 33% overhead share.
For preliminary purchasing, this could lead to planning capacities such as:
- Overhead tank: approximately 750 L or greater
- Cistern: approximately 1,500 L or greater
Because nominal tank capacities differ among manufacturers, always confirm actual available dimensions and capacities before purchasing.
How to Calculate Rectangular Water Tank Capacity
For a rectangular water tank or cistern, use its internal usable water dimensions.
Since one cubic meter equals 1,000 liters:
For example, a cistern with an internal usable water space of:
- Length = 2.00 m
- Width = 1.50 m
- Water depth = 1.00 m
has a volume of:
Therefore:
How to Calculate Cylindrical Water Tank Capacity
For a vertical cylindrical tank, the calculator uses the internal diameter and usable water height.
For a tank with a 1.20 m internal diameter and 1.50 m usable water height:
or approximately:
Liters, Cubic Meters and Gallons
Water tank capacities in the Philippines are commonly discussed in liters, while concrete cisterns and engineering quantities may also be expressed in cubic meters.
| Conversion | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 cubic meter | 1,000 liters |
| 1 US gallon | Approximately 3.785 liters |
| 1,000 liters | 1.000 m³ |
Can I Calculate How Long My Existing Tank Will Last?
Yes. The Existing Tank Volume tab includes an optional household supply check.
For example, a 3,000 L usable tank serving five occupants at 150 L/person/day has an estimated daily demand of:
Therefore:
This estimate assumes the entered consumption remains constant and the tank starts with the full usable volume.
Nominal Tank Capacity vs Usable Water Capacity
A manufacturer's nominal tank capacity and the actual usable volume in an installed system may not always be identical.
For an existing tank, the calculator uses the internal usable water dimensions you enter. It does not automatically add external wall dimensions, freeboard or unusable bottom space.
When purchasing a manufactured tank, use the manufacturer's published capacity and dimensional information for the specific product.
Does Water Tank Size Determine Pump Size?
No. Tank capacity alone is not enough to select a water pump.
Pump sizing may require consideration of:
- Required flow rate
- Required water pressure
- Vertical elevation
- Pipe diameter and length
- Fittings and friction losses
- Total dynamic head
- Number and type of fixtures
- Pump performance curve
For this reason, the Water Tank Size Calculator intentionally does not recommend pump horsepower.
Does This Calculator Include Fire-Water Storage?
No. The calculator estimates domestic household water storage only.
What the Water Tank Calculator Does Not Design
This calculator does not determine:
- Structural tank wall or slab thickness
- Reinforcement requirements
- Tank foundation design
- Roof or platform capacity for overhead tanks
- Pump horsepower
- Total dynamic head
- Water pressure
- Pipe diameter
- Fire-fighting reserve
- Irrigation demand
- Commercial or industrial water demand
- Rainwater harvesting yield
- Water treatment requirements
Large tanks and elevated tanks can impose significant structural loads. Final support and structural requirements should be assessed for the actual installation.
Water Tank Size Calculator Philippines FAQs
What size water tank do I need for my house?
The required size depends on household occupancy, expected daily water use, the number of storage days desired and any additional reserve. Enter these values in the calculator to obtain a preliminary storage estimate.
How many liters of water does one person need per day?
This calculator uses 150 L/person/day as its default planning value and provides 100 L/person/day, 200 L/person/day and custom options. Actual household consumption varies.
What size water tank is suitable for a family of 4?
At 150 L/person/day, four people require approximately 600 L for one day before adding any reserve. With a 10% reserve, the calculated requirement becomes 660 L, so a nominal tank above that requirement may be considered.
What size water tank is suitable for a family of 5?
At 150 L/person/day, five people require 750 L for one day. Adding a 10% reserve gives 825 L, making approximately 1,000 L a practical preliminary nominal capacity under those assumptions.
Is a 1,000-liter water tank enough for a family of 5?
At an assumed demand of 150 L/person/day, five people use approximately 750 L/day. A full 1,000 L usable capacity would therefore represent about 1.33 days of supply at that consumption rate.
How do I calculate water tank capacity in liters?
For a rectangular tank, multiply internal length × width × usable water depth in meters, then multiply the cubic-meter result by 1,000 to obtain liters.
How do I calculate the capacity of a round water tank?
For a vertical cylindrical tank, use π × radius² × usable water height. If the dimensions are in meters, multiply the resulting cubic meters by 1,000 to convert to liters.
How many liters are in one cubic meter of water?
One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters.
How long will a 2,000-liter water tank last?
Divide the usable 2,000 L capacity by the household's estimated daily water consumption. For example, if the household uses 750 L/day, 2,000 L represents approximately 2.67 days of supply.
Should I use a cistern and an overhead tank?
That depends on water-supply pressure, reliability, pumping arrangements and the building design. The calculator can provide a preliminary storage split, but it does not determine whether a particular plumbing arrangement is required.
Why does the calculator use a 33% overhead tank share?
The 33% value is only a default planning assumption for users who select a cistern plus overhead tank. It is editable and is not presented as a universal Philippine code requirement.
Does a bigger water tank need a bigger pump?
Not necessarily. Pump selection depends on required flow, pressure, elevation, pipe losses and the pump's performance characteristics, not simply the number of liters stored in the tank.
Can I use the outside dimensions of a concrete cistern?
No. To estimate usable water capacity, enter the internal usable length, width and water depth. Outside dimensions include wall and slab thicknesses that do not hold water.
Does the calculator include fire-water reserve?
No. The calculator is for preliminary domestic household storage only. Fire-protection water requirements must be assessed separately.
Can I use the result as the final engineering design?
No. The result is a preliminary storage estimate. Final tank selection, plumbing, pumping, structural support and installation requirements should reflect the actual project conditions and applicable requirements.
