Because tiles cannot normally be purchased as fractions of a piece, the calculator rounds purchase quantities upward. An additional allowance can then be included for cutting, breakage and wastage.
How Many Tiles Are Needed Per Square Meter?
The number of tiles per square meter depends on the dimensions of the tile. The figures below show the theoretical number of full tiles needed to cover one square meter before considering cuts or wastage.

These figures are mathematical coverage rates rather than recommended purchase quantities. Actual projects require whole tiles and may need additional pieces for cuts, breakage, pattern alignment and site conditions.
How Many 60×60 Tiles Are Needed Per Square Meter?
A 60 × 60 cm tile covers:
1 m² ÷ 0.36 m² = approximately 2.78 tiles per square meter
This does not mean you can purchase 2.78 tiles. The total tiled area should be divided by 0.36 m², after which the required quantity is rounded upward and an appropriate allowance is added.
How Much Extra Tile Should You Allow for Wastage?
Extra tiles are normally needed because some pieces must be cut around walls, corners, columns, doors, fixtures and other obstructions. Tiles may also be damaged during transportation or installation.
The calculator uses 7% as its default preliminary allowance. This is consistent with the extra allowance recommended by a major Philippine home-improvement retailer for cuts, damage, errors and obstacles.
The appropriate allowance still depends on the project. Simple areas with efficient layouts may have relatively little waste, while diagonal layouts, complicated room shapes, numerous corners or patterns that require alignment can require a higher allowance.

Adhesive coverage should always be treated as an estimate. Actual consumption can change significantly depending on substrate flatness and condition, tile size, the profile or smoothness of the back of the tile, trowel size, application thickness and installation method. Follow the selected adhesive manufacturer's technical instructions for the actual project.

Example: 20 m² Floor Using 60×60 cm Tiles
Assume a room measures 5 m × 4 m, with no deductions. The selected tiles measure 60 × 60 cm, the allowance is 7%, and each box contains 4 tiles.
Floor area:
5 m × 4 m = 20 m²
Area of one tile:
0.60 m × 0.60 m = 0.36 m²
Theoretical tile quantity:
20 ÷ 0.36 = 55.56 tiles
Tiles before allowance:
56 pieces
Including 7% allowance:
55.56 × 1.07 = 59.44 → 60 pieces
Boxes:
60 ÷ 4 = 15 boxes
60 tiles or 15 boxes
Using an approximate adhesive coverage of 2.6 m² per 25 kg bag: 20 ÷ 2.6 = 7.69, which rounds upward to a preliminary estimate of 8 bags of tile adhesive.

Does this tile calculator include grout?
No. Grout is not included in the current calculator because grout consumption depends on factors such as tile dimensions, grout-joint width, joint depth and the grout product being used. A separate grout calculation is more appropriate than applying a single generic rate.
Can I enter a custom tile size?
