Room Conditions to Consider

    Preliminary sizing basis: 500 kJ/hr of cooling capacity per square meter of floor area, together with published Philippine room-area/HP guidance. Sun exposure, occupants, ceiling height, windows, roof exposure and appliances can increase actual cooling requirements. Final selection should be checked against the rated cooling capacity of the specific aircon model.

    Aircon HP by Room Size in the Philippines

    Room floor area is a useful starting point when estimating aircon capacity. The preliminary Philippine room-size reference used by this calculator includes the following ranges.

    Room Floor AreaApproximate Aircon Size
    6–11 m²0.5 HP
    12–17 m²0.75 HP
    18–22 m²1.0 HP
    23–27 m²1.5 HP
    28–40 m²2.0 HP
    41–54 m²2.5 HP

    These ranges are intended as a preliminary room-sizing guide. Floor area alone does not describe every source of heat entering a room, so the final aircon selection may need additional review.

    How Does the Aircon Size Calculator Work?

    The calculator first determines the floor area of the room:

    Room Area (m²)
    Room Length × Room Width

    For the preliminary cooling estimate, the calculator uses a base sizing factor of:

    500 kJ/hr per square meter of room floor area

    The base cooling requirement is therefore:

    Cooling Requirement (kJ/hr)
    Room Area (m²) × 500 kJ/hr/m²

    The result is also converted into BTU/hr and kW so that you can compare it more easily with the cooling-capacity specifications published for individual aircon models.

    Aircon HP vs BTU: What Should You Compare?

    When shopping for an air conditioner, you may see units described as 0.5 HP, 1.0 HP, 1.5 HP or 2.0 HP. However, the marketed HP class should not be treated as an exact cooling-capacity conversion.

    Two aircon models sold under the same nominal HP class can have different rated cooling capacities. For this reason, the calculator also displays the estimated requirement in BTU/hr and kW.

    Useful buying tip: When comparing aircon models, check the manufacturer’s rated cooling capacity rather than relying only on the HP label.

    Example: What Aircon Size for a 20 m² Room?

    Example Room: 5 m × 4 m

    Consider a room measuring 5 m long × 4 m wide under normal room conditions.

    Room Area:
    5 m × 4 m = 20.00 m²

    Base Cooling Requirement:
    20 × 500 = 10,000 kJ/hr

    This is approximately:

    • 9,478 BTU/hr
    • 2.78 kW cooling capacity
    Preliminary room-size reference:
    1.0 HP

    A 20 m² room falls within the 18–22 m² preliminary range used for the 1.0 HP class. Strong sunlight, extra occupants or other heat-load conditions can increase the actual cooling requirement.

    What Can Increase the Aircon Size You Need?

    Room area is only the starting point. Real cooling demand is also affected by heat entering or being generated inside the room.

    Conditions that can increase cooling requirements include:

    • strong or direct sunlight;
    • more occupants;
    • high ceilings;
    • large windows or glass areas;
    • rooms directly below a hot roof;
    • computers and electronic equipment;
    • refrigerators and other heat-producing appliances;
    • cooking equipment; and
    • other significant internal or external heat sources.

    The calculator’s Improve My Estimate section helps identify these conditions. They are shown as warnings rather than being converted into arbitrary hidden percentage adjustments.

    Why Does Sunlight Affect Aircon Sizing?

    Direct solar exposure can increase the amount of heat entering a room through walls, roofs and windows. A room exposed to strong afternoon sun can therefore have a higher cooling load than another room of exactly the same floor area that remains shaded.

    This is why two rooms with identical dimensions do not always require exactly the same cooling capacity.

    Does the Number of People in a Room Matter?

    Yes. People release heat into the room, so occupancy is one of the factors considered when assessing cooling load.

    A bedroom normally occupied by one or two people may have a different requirement from a room of the same size regularly occupied by several people.

    Do High Ceilings Need More Aircon Capacity?

    A higher ceiling increases the volume of air inside the room. Floor area alone may therefore become less representative of the actual cooling requirement when the ceiling is unusually high.

    The calculator flags ceiling heights above 3.0 m for additional consideration rather than automatically applying an unsupported adjustment factor.

    Should I Buy a Bigger Aircon to Be Safe?

    Bigger is not automatically better. An air conditioner should be appropriately sized for the space and actual cooling load.

    If your room has several additional heat-load conditions, use the calculator result as a starting point and compare the next available capacity with the manufacturer’s sizing guidance. For unusual rooms, commercial spaces or significant heat loads, a proper HVAC heat-load assessment is preferable.

    Aircon Size Calculator Philippines FAQs

    What HP aircon do I need for my room?

    It depends on the room area and actual heat load. As a preliminary guide, this calculator uses room dimensions to estimate cooling capacity and then shows an approximate HP class. Sun exposure, occupants, ceiling height, windows and appliances should also be considered.

    What aircon size is suitable for a 20 m² room?

    A 20 m² room falls within the 18–22 m² preliminary room-size range corresponding to approximately 1.0 HP. The calculator estimates a base cooling requirement of about 9,478 BTU/hr for 20 m². Actual room conditions can require a different capacity.

    What aircon size is suitable for a 25 m² room?

    A 25 m² room falls within the 23–27 m² preliminary room-size range corresponding to approximately 1.5 HP. Check the actual rated cooling capacity of the unit and consider sunlight, occupancy and other heat loads before purchasing.

    How many BTU do I need for my room?

    Enter your room dimensions into the calculator. It calculates a preliminary cooling requirement and converts the result into BTU/hr, allowing you to compare the estimate with the rated cooling capacity of aircon models.

    Is 1 HP always the same BTU capacity?

    No. Aircon HP is commonly used as a product-size description, but actual rated cooling capacity can vary between models and manufacturers. Compare the published BTU/hr or kW cooling capacity of the specific unit.

    Does an inverter aircon need a different room size calculation?

    The room still has a cooling load regardless of whether the selected aircon is inverter or non-inverter. Inverter technology affects how the equipment operates and controls its output, but the unit must still have suitable cooling capacity for the room.

    Does direct sunlight mean I need a bigger aircon?

    Strong direct sunlight can increase the cooling load, particularly when solar heat enters through windows, walls or the roof. The appropriate increase depends on the actual room conditions, so the calculator flags this factor for further consideration rather than automatically applying an arbitrary percentage.

    Can I enter room dimensions in feet?

    Yes. The Aircon Size Calculator accepts room length and width in either meters or feet and converts the dimensions internally before calculating the room area.

    Can I use this calculator for an office or commercial space?

    The calculator can provide a preliminary reference, but commercial spaces can have significant heat loads from people, lighting, computers, equipment, glazing and operating conditions. A detailed HVAC heat-load calculation is recommended for commercial applications.

    Is this an HVAC heat-load calculation?

    No. This is a preliminary homeowner-oriented aircon sizing calculator. It does not replace a detailed HVAC heat-load calculation or manufacturer equipment selection.

    Important Sizing Note

    This Aircon Size Calculator Philippines provides a preliminary sizing estimate only. Actual cooling requirements depend on room construction, insulation, orientation, solar exposure, windows, occupants, equipment, ventilation and other heat gains. Always compare the estimated requirement with the rated cooling capacity of the specific aircon model. For unusual rooms, large spaces or commercial applications, consult the manufacturer, supplier or a qualified HVAC professional.
