Roof Pitch & Angle Calculator
Our free Roofing Calculator Philippines helps homeowners, contractors, engineers and construction professionals estimate the quantity of long-span roofing needed for a simple roof. It calculates roof geometry, sloping roof area, required panel length, number of roofing panels, total ordered linear meters and a preliminary roofing cost. The built-in roof pitch calculator can also convert rise and run into roof angle, slope percentage and sloping length.
How to Use the Roofing Calculator Philippines
The first calculator is designed primarily for simple gable roofs and single-slope or shed roofs using long-span metal roofing. Enter the dimensions and specifications that apply to your project, then select Calculate Roofing.
- Select whether the roof is a gable roof or single-slope roof.
- Enter the building length and width in meters.
- Enter the eave and end overhangs.
- Enter the roof angle shown on the design or determined from the roof pitch.
- Enter the roofing manufacturer's effective coverage width.
- Select a preliminary roofing rate or enter your supplier's actual price per linear meter.
- Add optional allowances for accessories, delivery or labor when required.
The results provide a preliminary roofing takeoff including panel quantity, panel length, roof area, total linear meters and estimated cost.
How the Roof Area Is Calculated
A pitched roof has a larger actual surface area than its horizontal footprint. The calculator therefore determines the horizontal run and adjusts it using the roof angle.
The required long-span roofing panel length is then calculated as:
For a symmetrical gable roof, the building width is divided between the two roof slopes before the eave overhang is added. For a single-slope roof, the roof spans across the full building width.
Gable Roof Area
A gable roof has two roof planes. After determining the sloping panel length, the calculator uses:
Single-Slope Roof Area
A shed or single-slope roof has only one roof plane:
How Many Long-Span Roofing Panels Do I Need?
Roof area alone is not enough to determine the number of long-span roofing sheets. The calculator uses the effective coverage width of the selected roofing profile.
Because roofing panels must be ordered as whole pieces, the result is always rounded up to the next whole panel.
For a gable roof, the panel quantity per slope is multiplied by two. A single-slope roof requires only one set of panels.
What Is Effective Coverage Width?
The effective coverage width is the actual width covered by one installed roofing panel after the required side engagement or overlap of the roofing profile is considered.
It is not necessarily the same as the panel's raw or nominal width.
The calculator uses 1.00 m only as an editable starting value. It should not be interpreted as a universal Philippine roofing standard because effective widths differ among roofing profiles and manufacturers.
How Long Should Long-Span Roofing Be?
For simple roofs, long-span roofing panels generally run in the direction of the roof slope, from the ridge or high point toward the eave. The required panel length therefore depends on the horizontal roof run and roof angle.
The calculator assumes the roofing can be supplied at the full required sloping length. It does not automatically add an end lap.
If a required panel is longer than the supplier can manufacture, transport or safely handle, the roofing layout and required end laps should be confirmed with the manufacturer, supplier and project designer.
How the Roofing Cost Estimate Works
Long-span roofing in the Philippines may be quoted by suppliers using a price per linear meter. The calculator therefore determines the total ordered length of all roofing panels.
The preliminary roofing sheet cost is:
For example, if a roof requires 22 panels that are approximately 4.79 meters long, the ordered roofing quantity is about 105.35 linear meters. At a supplier rate of ₱350 per linear meter, the preliminary roofing sheet cost is approximately ₱36,874.
The calculator uses the full unrounded values internally, so the final cost may differ slightly from a manual calculation using the rounded numbers displayed on screen.
Preliminary Long-Span Roofing Price References
The calculator includes editable preliminary rates to make early budgeting easier. These are reference assumptions only and should be replaced with your supplier's current quotation whenever available.
| Nominal Roofing Thickness | Preliminary Rate Used | Calculator Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| 0.35 mm | ₱250 / linear meter | Editable |
| 0.40 mm | ₱280 / linear meter | Editable |
| 0.50 mm | ₱350 / linear meter | Editable |
| 0.60 mm | ₱420 / linear meter | Editable |
Actual roofing prices can vary according to manufacturer, supplier, roofing profile, thickness, coating, color, order quantity, project location, delivery requirements and market conditions.
What Is Included in the Roofing Cost Estimate?
The main calculated amount covers the estimated long-span roofing sheet material based on the calculated linear meters and selected or entered rate.
The calculator also provides optional user-entered allowances for:
- Ridge rolls, flashing and gutters
- Fasteners and roofing accessories
- Delivery
- Labor
These optional fields are not automatically estimated because project conditions and quotations can vary substantially.
What Is Not Automatically Included?
- Roof trusses and structural framing
- Purlins
- Structural steel
- Insulation
- Ceiling works
- Waterproofing systems
- Removal of existing roofing
- Scaffolding or access equipment
- Structural engineering or design fees
- Other project-specific works
Roof Pitch Calculator
The second tab is a roof pitch calculator that converts a measured rise and horizontal run into roof angle, roof slope percentage, rise-to-run ratio, slope factor and sloping length.
Roof Pitch Example
If the roof rises 1.50 m over a horizontal run of 5.00 m:
- Roof angle ≈ 16.70°
- Roof slope = 30%
- Normalized rise-to-run ratio ≈ 1 : 3.33
- Slope factor ≈ 1.0440
- Sloping length ≈ 5.22 m
The result describes the roof geometry only. It does not mean that the calculated pitch is suitable for every roofing product.
What Is the Standard Roof Pitch in the Philippines?
There is no single roof pitch that should be treated as appropriate for every roof in the Philippines. Minimum slopes depend on the roofing system, profile, manufacturer requirements, drainage conditions and the approved building design.
Some specially designed metal roofing systems can accommodate relatively low slopes, while other roof designs use considerably steeper pitches.
Why Roof Angle Matters
Increasing the roof angle increases the sloping distance from the ridge to the eave. This increases the actual roof surface area and the required roofing panel length compared with a flat horizontal measurement.
Roof pitch also affects drainage, architectural appearance and the suitability of particular roofing systems, but those design considerations are outside the scope of this quantity calculator.
Gable Roof vs Single-Slope Roof
| Roof Type | Roof Planes | How the Calculator Treats It |
|---|---|---|
| Gable Roof | 2 | The building span is divided between two symmetrical roof slopes. |
| Single-Slope / Shed Roof | 1 | The roof slopes across the full building width. |
Can I Use This Calculator for Hip or Valley Roofs?
Not for a precise long-span sheet takeoff.
Hip roofs, valleys, L-shaped roofs and other irregular roof layouts can require panels of different lengths and create project-specific cutting patterns and waste. Calculating only the total roof area can therefore give a misleading roofing sheet quantity.
For these roof types, use the approved roof plan and prepare a panel-by-panel takeoff or obtain a roofing layout from the supplier or contractor.
Roofing Calculator Philippines FAQs
How do I calculate how many roofing sheets I need?
For long-span roofing, divide the required roof length by the manufacturer's effective panel coverage width and round the result up to the next whole panel. For a symmetrical gable roof, multiply the panel quantity per slope by two.
What is effective coverage width in roofing?
Effective coverage width is the actual width covered by an installed roofing panel after its profile connection or required side overlap is considered. Use the manufacturer's effective coverage rather than the raw sheet width.
Does the calculator automatically include roofing overlap?
Side engagement or overlap should already be reflected in the effective coverage width entered by the user. The calculator does not automatically add an end lap because long-span roofing is commonly supplied at the required cut length where practical.
How is long-span roofing cost calculated?
The calculator multiplies the total ordered linear meters of roofing panels by the selected or entered supplier price per linear meter. Optional allowances can then be added for accessories, delivery and labor.
Are the roofing prices in the calculator fixed?
No. The included prices are preliminary reference rates only. The roofing price field is editable so you can use a current quotation from your preferred supplier.
Does a steeper roof require more roofing material?
For the same horizontal dimensions, increasing the roof angle increases the sloping roof length and actual roof surface area. This can increase the required linear meters of roofing material.
How do I calculate roof pitch from rise and run?
Divide the rise by the horizontal run. The roof slope percentage is that ratio multiplied by 100, while the roof angle is calculated using the arctangent of rise divided by run.
Is roof pitch the same as roof angle?
They describe related roof geometry but are expressed differently. Roof angle is normally stated in degrees, while pitch or slope may be expressed as rise-to-run or as a percentage.
What roof pitch should I use in the Philippines?
There is no single pitch suitable for every Philippine roof. Use the approved design and follow the minimum-slope requirements of the actual roofing system and manufacturer.
Can I use the calculator for a single-slope roof?
Yes. Select Single-Slope / Shed Roof. The calculator will treat the roof as one plane spanning across the full building width plus the entered eave overhangs.
Can I use this for a hip roof?
Not for a precise panel quantity. Hip and valley roofs require a more detailed roof layout because roofing panels can have different lengths and cutting requirements.
Does this calculator estimate purlins?
No. Purlin sizes and spacing depend on the structural design, roofing system, spans and loading requirements. They should not be automatically designed from roof area alone.
Is the roofing calculator suitable for final ordering?
Use it for preliminary estimating and checking. Before ordering, confirm actual dimensions, panel layout, effective coverage, required panel lengths, accessories and installation requirements with the approved plans and roofing supplier or contractor.
