Estimator basis: The calculation follows commonly used Philippine construction estimating relationships for cement-sand plastering. Sand volume is based on the plaster volume, while cement quantity is derived from the selected cement:sand proportion using an approximate cement bulk density of 1,440 kg/m³. This is a preliminary quantity estimator only. Actual plaster thickness, mortar class, materials and workmanship must follow the approved drawings and project specifications.

Our free Plastering Calculator Philippines helps homeowners, contractors, quantity surveyors and construction professionals estimate the cement and sand required for wall plastering. Enter your wall dimensions or a known plastering area, select the number of wall faces, plaster thickness, cement-sand mortar mix and material allowance, and the calculator will estimate the plaster volume, cement requirement and sand quantity.

Important: This is a preliminary construction quantity estimator. The required plaster thickness, mortar class, cement-sand proportion, materials and workmanship must follow the approved drawings, project specifications and applicable requirements.

How to Use the Plastering Calculator

The calculator provides two ways to enter the size of your plastering work. Choose Wall Dimensions if you know the wall length and height, or choose Known Plastering Area if the net area has already been measured from drawings or a quantity takeoff.

  1. Select Wall Dimensions or Known Plastering Area.
  2. Choose whether plaster will be applied to one side or both sides of the wall.
  3. Enter the wall dimensions or known area.
  4. Deduct doors, windows and other openings where applicable.
  5. Select the required plaster thickness.
  6. Select the mortar class or cement-to-sand proportion.
  7. Select the cement bag size.
  8. Add a material allowance if required.
  9. Select Calculate Plastering Materials.

How to Calculate Plastering Area

For a rectangular wall, the gross wall area is calculated by multiplying the wall length by its height.

Gross Wall Area = Wall Length × Wall Height

Doors, windows and other areas that will not receive plaster can then be deducted.

Net Plastering Area = Gross Wall Area − Openings

If both faces of the same wall will be plastered, the net area per face is multiplied by two.

Example: A 5 m long × 3 m high wall has a gross area of 15 m². If it contains 1 m² of openings, the net plastering area is 14 m² per face. If both sides are plastered, the total plastering area is 28 m².

How Much Plastering Mortar Do I Need?

After determining the net area, the calculator converts the selected plaster thickness from millimeters to meters and calculates the plaster volume.

Plaster Volume = Net Plastering Area × Plaster Thickness

For example, 28 m² of plastering at 16 mm thickness requires a theoretical plaster volume of:

28 m² × 0.016 m = 0.448 m³

Plaster Thickness in Philippine Construction

Plaster thickness should be based on the project drawings and specifications. Different projects can specify different thicknesses depending on the wall, finish and construction requirements.

The calculator provides commonly encountered estimating options including:

  • 8 mm
  • 10 mm
  • 12 mm
  • 15 mm
  • 16 mm
  • 20 mm
  • 25 mm
  • Custom thickness

The default value of 16 mm is provided as a convenient estimating starting point and should not be interpreted as a universal requirement for every Philippine construction project.

Plastering Mortar Classes and Mix Ratios

The calculator includes cement-sand mortar classes commonly encountered in Philippine construction estimating references.

Mortar ClassCement : SandCalculator Option
Class A1 : 2Available
Class B1 : 3Default estimating option
Class C1 : 4Available
Class D1 : 5Available

Do not select a mortar class only because it produces a lower material quantity. The mortar class or mix required by the project specification should always govern.

How Cement Is Calculated for Plastering

The calculator uses a Philippine construction estimating relationship for cement-sand plastering rather than applying a generic international dry-volume multiplier.

For a cement-to-sand ratio of 1:N, the estimated cement volume is derived from the plaster/sand volume and selected sand proportion.

Cement Volume = Plaster Volume ÷ Sand Parts

The cement volume is converted to kilograms using an approximate cement bulk density of 1,440 kg/m³.

Cement Weight = Cement Volume × 1,440 kg/m³

The resulting weight is then divided by the selected cement bag size.

Cement Bags = Cement Weight ÷ Bag Weight

Example: Cement and Sand for 28 m² of Plastering

Consider 28 m² of wall plastering using 16 mm Class B 1:3 cement-sand mortar.

The plaster volume is:

28 × 0.016 = 0.448 m³

Using the calculator's Philippine estimating relationship:

  • Theoretical sand = 0.448 m³
  • Theoretical cement = 215.04 kg
  • Equivalent 40 kg cement bags = 5.38 bags

With a 5% material allowance:

  • Cement = approximately 225.79 kg
  • Equivalent cement = approximately 5.64 bags
  • Suggested whole-bag purchase = 6 bags
  • Sand = approximately 0.470 m³

Why Does the Calculator Round Cement Bags Up?

The calculated requirement can result in a fraction of a cement bag. For purchasing purposes, the calculator rounds the final cement quantity after the selected material allowance up to the next whole bag.

For example, if the estimated requirement is 5.64 bags, the suggested purchase quantity is 6 bags rather than 5.

40 kg vs 50 kg Cement Bags

The calculator supports both 40 kg and 50 kg cement bags. Changing the bag size does not change the calculated cement weight required for the plastering work; it changes only the number of bags corresponding to that weight.

For example, 200 kg of calculated cement is equivalent to 5 bags when using 40 kg bags, but only 4 bags when using 50 kg bags.

What Is the Material Allowance?

The calculator allows the user to add 0%, 5%, 10% or a custom material allowance. This can help account for normal handling, minor site losses and quantity variation.

The default 5% allowance is an estimating assumption only. It is not a mandatory Philippine construction standard. Actual allowances should reflect the project conditions and estimator's requirements.

Plastering vs CHB Laying Mortar

Plastering mortar and CHB laying mortar serve different purposes and should not be confused when preparing a material estimate.

CHB laying mortar is used to bed and join concrete hollow blocks during wall construction. Plastering mortar is applied over the completed wall surface to produce the required finish.

If you are estimating the blocks and laying mortar for a wall, use our CHB Calculator Philippines. Use this plastering calculator for the subsequent plaster finish.

Does the Calculator Include Skim Coat or Paint?

No. This calculator estimates the cement and sand required for cement-sand plastering only.

It does not automatically include:

  • Skim coat
  • Putty
  • Primer
  • Paint
  • Waterproofing
  • Bonding agents
  • Wire mesh
  • Scaffolding
  • Special additives
  • Other finishing materials

Paint quantities can be estimated separately using our Paint Calculator Philippines.

Plastering Calculator Philippines FAQs

How do I calculate the area of a wall for plastering?

Multiply the wall length by its height, then deduct the area of doors, windows and other openings that will not receive plaster. If both sides of the wall will be plastered, calculate both faces.

How do I calculate cement and sand for plastering?

First determine the plastering area and plaster thickness to obtain the plaster volume. The required cement and sand can then be estimated using the specified cement-sand mortar proportion.
